A Decade of Despair: 10 Years On, The Disappearance of DeOrr Kunz Jr. Remains an Unsolved Idaho Mystery
SALMON, Idaho – July 10, 2025 – Ten years have passed since a routine camping trip in Idaho’s remote backcountry turned into a nightmare, leaving behind a chilling mystery that continues to haunt investigators and a family desperate for answers. On July 10, 2015, two-year-old DeOrr Kunz Jr. vanished without a trace from the Timber Creek Campground in Lemhi County, and a decade later, the agonizing question remains: Where is DeOrr Kunz Jr.?
The toddler was last seen during a family camping trip with his parents, Vernal DeOrr Kunz and Jessica Mitchell, his great-grandfather Robert Walton, and Walton’s friend Isaac Reinwand. According to their initial accounts, DeOrr was last seen near the family’s camper early that Friday morning. His mother and father stated they left him with his great-grandfather while they explored a nearby area. When they returned, the great-grandfather claimed DeOrr was gone.

The disappearance triggered an immediate and massive search effort. Hundreds of volunteers, law enforcement agencies, search and rescue teams, K-9 units, and even aircraft scoured the rugged, heavily wooded terrain near the campsite. Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, but despite the exhaustive efforts, not a single trace of DeOrr – no clothing, no tracks, no definitive evidence – was ever found.
The initial theory of a child wandering off and getting lost, or even a possible animal attack, quickly gave way to a more troubling suspicion. The complete lack of physical evidence at the scene, coupled with what investigators described as inconsistent statements from the adults present, shifted the focus of the investigation.
While never charged, his parents, Vernal Kunz and Jessica Mitchell, were named as suspects by the Lemhi County Sheriff’s Office early in the investigation, citing what they called evolving narratives and failed polygraph tests. Both parents have steadfastly maintained their innocence, asserting they have cooperated fully with authorities and are as desperate as anyone to find their son. Mitchell later spent time in jail for unrelated welfare fraud, which her legal team claimed was an attempt by the state to pressure her regarding DeOrr’s case.
The great-grandfather, Robert Walton, who was supposed to be watching DeOrr, also gave differing accounts of the morning’s events. He passed away in 2019, taking any further potential insights with him.
Lemhi County Sheriff Steve Penner, who has overseen the case from the beginning, acknowledges the immense frustration. “This case remains open, and we continue to follow up on any credible lead that comes in, however rare they may be now,” Sheriff Penner stated recently. “It’s been ten years, and the pain for everyone involved, and the mystery, has not lessened. Someone out there knows something, even if it’s just a small detail that might unlock this.”
The DeOrr Kunz Jr. case is a haunting example of a child vanishing without explanation, leaving behind only questions and speculation. Without a body, a crime scene, or a witness, the investigation remains in a perplexing limbo. For his family, the past decade has been an agonizing wait for closure that has yet to arrive.
As the tenth anniversary passes, the vast Idaho wilderness holds its secrets tightly, and the image of a bright-eyed two-year-old remains a poignant reminder of a mystery that continues to defy resolution. The question of where DeOrr Kunz Jr. is, continues to echo through the mountains, a decade later, unanswered.
