Primm, Nevada: The horrific murder of Sherrice Iverson, a 7-year-old girl whose life was tragically cut short at the Primadonna Resort and Casino in Primm, Nevada, on May 25, 1997. The case continues to resonate deeply, serving as a chilling reminder of the vulnerability of children and the depravity of which some are capable.
Iverson was sexually assaulted and murdered by Jeremy Strohmeyer, then 18, in a women’s restroom at the casino arcade. Strohmeyer, who was visiting the casino with a friend, confessed to the crime after initially denying involvement. His accomplice, David Cash, admitted to witnessing the assault and failing to intervene or report it to authorities.
The murder sent shockwaves through the small community of Primm and across the nation. The focus quickly shifted to the safety of children in public spaces, particularly in casinos and entertainment venues. The tragedy also ignited a heated debate surrounding the moral responsibility of bystanders and the legal ramifications of inaction.
Strohmeyer pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in exchange for avoiding the death penalty and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Cash, despite public outrage, was never charged with a crime directly related to Iverson’s death. He faced only misdemeanor charges of obstruction of justice, eventually serving a reduced sentence.

The case sparked significant controversy and fueled calls for “Good Samaritan” laws that would require individuals to intervene in situations where someone is in danger. While Nevada does not have a general duty to rescue law, Iverson’s death highlighted the complex ethical and legal considerations surrounding intervention and responsibility in traumatic situations.
“The memory of Sherrice Iverson is forever etched in the minds of those who lived here then,” said longtime Primm resident, Maria Rodriguez. “It changed everything. It made us more vigilant, more aware of the dangers that can lurk even in seemingly safe places.”
In the years since the tragedy, the Primadonna Resort and Casino, now known as Buffalo Bill’s Resort & Casino, implemented stricter security measures and increased surveillance. The casino also works with local organizations to promote child safety and awareness.
“While time has passed, the pain of losing Sherrice remains,” a statement released by a local community group dedicated to child safety read. “We must continue to honor her memory by fighting for the protection of children and ensuring that such a tragedy never happens again.”
